Sega Announces a Portable RPG that isn't on DS

Sega recently announced a new PSP RPG in the works via the latest Famitsu entitled Garnet Chronicle.

Centered around continuous wars fought over a Demonic Stone, Garnet Chronicle is a throw-back to more medieval-feeling RPGs. The game is being lauded for its high-quality voice cast, simple play style, and cool character designs from Lineage character designers Ho-Yeong Kim and Dong-Suk Kim.

Garnet Chronicle centers around a young soldier named Killian and a half-elf treasure huntress named Spinel. Killian had always aspired to knighthood, but was unable to defeat his rivals during his time at the training academy, and still has a complex about graduating in 2nd place. After graduation, while traveling to join the Vigilante Corps, he meets and helps a half-elf woman named Spinel. After joining the Vigilante Corps, his first mission is to search out information on the Demonic Stone, but is attacked by a mysterious group. Spinel appears again and saves him, but the two are unwittingly plunged into the constant battles over the stone.

The game features relatively standard RPG systems, with enemies appearing on-screen during exploration, and a basic turn-based battle system. Skills will be handled via a skill tree system reminscent of Xenosaga. All in all, pretty standard stuff.

Garnet Chronicle is set to release on Japanese PSP on October 23rd.

Though I like the medieval style and the character designs, I'm going to need a lot more convincing that this game is anything but a standard cookie-cutter RPG. How about you?

EDIT: I noticed that whoever scanned the Famitsu article painted (poorly) over Spinel's costume. I've added an older, poorer version of the scan that shows her in all her clothes-less glory.
