RUMOR: Final Fantasy XIII Worldwide in 2009?

According to a generally reliable source, the latest issue of Famitsu has mentioned that Square Enix's upcoming Final Fantasy XIII will be hitting "both sides of the Pacific sometime later this year."

Square Enix has yet to reveal an official date for the game other than the fact that it will be available on PlayStation 3 in Japan this year. It has been previously speculated that the game would be pushed back to 2010 for the North American and European PS3 and 360 release.

If this rumor is true, it could mean that FFXIII will be hitting Japan much sooner than we originally thought, though everything remains speculation at this point.

My feeling is, I better just see the actual game in motion before you even start teasing a worldwide release, Square Enix.

What do you think?

I still think we won't see this in English until well into 2010. The first Japanese playable demo isn't coming until March, and assuming a localization delay of 6-8 months, the full game would have to be available in Japan almost immediately after the demo. In which case, why bother with the demo at all, why not just announce the actual release date if they're this close. Only way this comes out in 2009 is if they're well into the English localization at this point and planning on a simultaneous or near-simultaneous worldwide release.

And that's not even taking into account the wrinkle of the Xbox 360 version, which according to Square won't even get started until after the Japanese PS3 release, and will be developed in tandem with the English localization. Who knows what effect that will have on the turnaround time for the US release, but it's not likely to shorten it, that's for sure.

That has been my logic as well.

As you said, the only way this could be true is if the Japanese version comes out within 1 or 2 months of the demo, and the English version (and 360 version) are already nearing completion.

Doesn't seem likely to me either, but I suppose it's not completely impossible.

Come on, its Square Enix! They have a thing with 'long development' and 'delay'. Final Fantasy XII was the longest game to be in state of development. I guess FF13 will be released in Japan this year but don't expect a US release this year especially with it being simultaneously release with the Xbox360 version.
