Plenty of Unsurprising Announcements from Square Enix

Over the weekend, Square Enix Japan held their annual Final Fantasy press conference "party" (called something so ridiculous I'm not even going to attempt to write it) this year focusing mainly on their Sony-based line-up. Cameras were not permitted into the show, so until some really sneaky reporter's shots turn up somewhere, we unfortunately have no visual proof for any of the following announcements. I guess you'll just have to trust me. ;)

First off, Final Fantasy XIII was announced for a 2009 release in Japan, and reiterated to be a PS3 exclusive in that region for the time being. Though no solid date (or even approximate quarter) was given, a demo of the game was announced for March 2009. This most likely means FFXIII will come out nearer the end of the year there. Still no clue when the North American and European release will be, but it has been mentioned in the past that they are not simultaneous with the Japanese release.

Next, another special edition of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will be released in Japan in March 2009 on Blu-Ray, and called Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete. The first printing of this version will included the aforementioned FFXIII demo, as well as trailers for Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy XIII Agito. There will also be an Advent Children PS3 bundle in Japan at the same time.

Some may remember that Final Fantasy XIII Agito is a cell-phone-based title, as is the resurrection of the PS1 survival-horror RPG series, Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday. However, at this conference it was announced that both of these games will be ported to the PSP. (This reminds me of the Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis PSP port that was supposed to happen. Hmmm...)

The three announced Kingdom Hearts games also all got approximate Japanese release dates. Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days for Nintendo DS will be available this winter, as will Kingdom Hearts: Coded for Japanese cell-phones. Meanwhile, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep for the PSP will ship sometime in 2009.

Finally, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, the PSP Final Fantasy Super Smash Bros. game was announced for release this December in Japan. (I technically shouldn't be covering news on this game, as it really isn't an RPG in any way, shape, or form. But I'll let it slide this time.)

Overall, I'd say that other than the PSP ports of Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday and Final Fantasy XIII Agito, there was really nothing surprising announced. I'll be really surprised if either of the previously mentioned PSP ports happen anytime this millennium...

April Fools Day: Square Enix Teases Final Fantasy XIII Alternative

Despite a successful release of Final Fantasy XIII worldwide on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Square Enix has announced that it will be remaking its latest HD epic into a more bite-sized title.

Tentatively titled Final Fantasy XIII Alternative, the game is being redone using the recent 16-bit engine used in the latest Chrono Trigger DS port to bring FFXIII to handheld systems later this year.

"Final Fantasy XIII is a hallmark of this generation," said the game's producer, Yoshinori Kitase, "but unfortunately, HD gaming has limited appeal."

Kitase explains that though the graphical prowess of the PS3 and 360 a nice for kids and single men, most people - especially in Japan, he says - are too busy to sit in front of a TV for over 60 hours to play a game like Final Fantasy XIII.

Porting the title to more portable devices seems like a smart business move in Japan where the games market is currently dominated by the DS and PSP, and even Square Enix's latest in the Dragon Quest franchise made its debut on DS.

"The DS is the obvious first step for Final Fantasy XIII," Kitase said, "but I think the 16-bit graphics engine we have chosen will work on PSP as well as various cellphones."

The game is still apparently very early in its development, but will likely be available early this fall, probably before Nintendo's new 3DS hits the market.

Its important to remember that the screens released here are still from a pre-alpha build, and will probably be cleaned up before launch.

Final Fantasy XIII was not everything I hoped for, but it was decent enough. I'm quite frankly not surprised to see this move from Square Enix, but that doesn't mean I'll be buying it again.

Final Fantasy XIII Movies Hint at Possibility of Games

Here are the extended trailers of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII that were shown at Square Enix's strangely named closed-door press conference earlier this year.

Both seem like movie trailers. Indeed, there is no gameplay present in either. So, yeah. My impression is: Square Enix still knows how to make badass 3D FMVs. Whether or not there will be a game underneath either of these titles, however, remains to be seen.

I just don't know about these games. Neither really gives me a "Final Fantasy" vibe. I suppose XIII proper comes the closest, but they just seem so different from the FF I grew up with, y'know?

I really need to see the games actually being played before I can formulate a better conclusion. (As a side note, it is reported that FFXIII gameplay will be shown in some form before the end of the year, presumably at JumpFesta.)

Final Fantasy XIII will be available on PlayStation 3 sometime next year in Japan, and someday on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America and Europe. Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be available on PlayStation 3 someday. I think.

Versing Your Agito with New Final Fantasy XIII Scans

Some new-ish screens and small trickles of "information" regarding Square Enix's latest titles in their other flagship series, Final Fantasy, have come down from above via the recent edition of Jump.

First up, the Final Fantasy XIII scan is definitely the most "detailed" of the three (not actually an accomplishment in this case), giving "explanations" of four new screenshots, most of which show off Lightning in various shots with "that guy in the toque" and "that archer chick." (I know "that guy in the toque" has a name, I just can't remember what it is right now.)

The first one shows off a couple of people (who look to me like Lightning and "that guy in the toque") surrounded by blue. The caption explains that the blue is actually a lake, and that the huge... thing just fell into it, causing the waves. ...So, are they floating, or just standing on the water? I don't know?

Next are a couple of screens with the three "revealed" characters standing around, looking depressed (or worried, so some similar emotion). Apparently, the water in the lake mentioned above has hardened somehow, and these pics are taken on it (the lake, that is). Also, "that archer chick" is apparently from the "Lower World."

Finally, the last shot explains that the heroes hear a voice, look up, and notice that they are surrounded by enemy forces! Why are they being chased?

The next scan for Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which only shows off two new screens. I could translate what the captions say, but they offer nothing but a literal description of the shots. Which is, there is a guy wearing black, with a solemn expression, who has just climbed a staircase. Then, there is a girl in a white dress looking at a strange painting.

Like, stop the presses! Is she really looking at a painting!? Breaking news: art appreciation in Final Fantasy Versus XIII CONFIRMED!

Finally is the cell-phone and PSP Final Fantasy Agito XIII. Again, only two screens for this one, but somehow, even less information than the previous two.

All we get is the fact that there are some people (I won't attempt a guess at their genders right now) who are in a magic institution. Also? They fight a soldier, who we can guess may or may not be an enemy. Oh, and the game will also be on PSP. Yes, that really is all it says. I couldn't make this stuff up, I promise.

Now, if you will, please take a moment to let this raging torrent of information soak in. Yes, this is Final Fantasy XIII marketing at its finest. 8 "new" "screens." No real info. No gameplay. Everyone wants these games. We get it.

Honestly? I'm really tired of Final Fantasy XIII already. For a game well over a year away with no gameplay details shown or revealed, we sure hear about it an awful lot. Don't even get me started on Versus or Agito.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete Coming to North America Too

As you are likely aware, Square Enix is re-re-releasing Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children on BluRay in Japan with some extra goodies and tacking on a "Complete" onto the end. The goodies include some bonus footage and the like, but is unarguably most notable for its inclusion of a playable PS3 demo for the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy XIII.

The hardest of the hardcore North American Final Fantasy fans have probably all pre-ordered Japanese copies to ensure that they will be able to get the demo. But for the fence-sitters or the import-wary among you, it seems that the BluRay will actually be making its way to North America early this summer.

The disc is touted as featuring the following:

- "Legacy of Final Fantasy VII" Featurette
- "Reminiscence of Final Fantasy VII" Original Story Digest
- On the Way to a Smile - Episode: Denzel Animated Film
- "Reminiscence of Final Fantasy VII VII Compilation" Story Digest
- Exclusive Sneak Peek at Final Fantasy XIII
- Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete Trailers

It is currently unconfirmed if the "sneak peak" of Final Fantasy XIII is indeed the playable demo, or a trailer, or something else entirely. (But chances are good that it is the demo, imo.)

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete will be available on BluRay this June in North America. It will be available in Japan on April 16, 2009.

Final Fantasy XIII Official Site Open, Character Details Ensue

If you can remember all the way back to last July, you'll remember that Square Enix opened a Final Fantasy XIII teaser site around the time that they announced the game's debut on the Xbox 360. There wasn't much there, so that's kind of where that ended.

Well, just this morning, Square Enix went ahead and officially opened the site up with screenshots and short character descriptions of the first three playable characters. I figure you can look at the screenshots yourself, but I have taken the liberty of translating the character descriptions for those readers who can't read moonspeak. Check them out below.

Lightning

She doesn't say much, and it's not certain if that's even her real name. She just goes by 'Lightning.'

Snow Villiers

A hot-blooded man who plunges forward using his strong body as a weapon, Snow is forward in his speech and honest with his feelings. There are many who adore him for his cheerful and optimistic atitude.

Oerba Dia Vanille

A cute girl who is hard-working and cheerful, Vanille hides a strong commitment to something, but keeps it well hidden for some reason.

In addition to the opening of the site, teaser sites for both Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII have also opened, and can all be found via the new Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII portal site. Good times.

Final Fantasy XIII will be available on PlayStation 3 sometime this year in Japan, and eventually on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America and Europe. No release dates have been confirmed for Versus or Agito yet.

Final Fantasy XIII Scans Reveal More Names

The latest issue of Shounen Jump has released a couple of new "details" (really, it's just names) for the upcoming (a relative term) trio of Final Fantasy XIIIs.

First up, Final Fantasy XIII (360/PS3) proper:

The blonde guy seen in many screens of the game, sometimes referred to as "That Guy in the Toque" (by yours truly), "Mr. 33cm" (a nickname given him by the developers), and "Bandanna Man" (I just recently became aware that some people called him this), is actually named Snow.

...Yikes. He has mean parents. "Snow" seems like something I would name my cat. Or maybe, if I was feeling cruel/creative, my daughter. But how cold-hearted does someone have to be to name their son Snow. Ouch.

Next, Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3):

As previously mentioned, the dark-robed protagonist is Noctus Lucious Cheram (or "Noct" amongst his friends), while the girl in the white dress is Stella Nox Fleure.

Finally, it was revealed that Final Fantasy Agito XIII (PSP) will feature a multiplayer feature of some sort (no doubt to capitalize on the success of multiplayer RPGs like Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star Portable), however, it is unclear at this point exactly how it will be implimented.

...I've said this before, but only Final Fantasy could get people excited by revealing nothing new but names of characters.

Final Fantasy XIII (proper) will be available in Japan on PS3 sometime next year, with no solid dates for North America, or either of the other FFXIII titles.

Besides Final Fantasy XIII for PS3 and 360, North America is getting a DSi downloadable RPG from Konami and Idea Factory's Spectral Force Genesis, while Europe gets Matrix's Avalon Code for DS.

Japan - who already got their FFXIII a few months back - gets a few PSP RPGs, a hard copy of Blade Chronicle, RPG Maker for the DS, and a new PS2 RPG from Flight Plan, who apparently can't get with the times. Oh, and a budget reprint of Sega's 7th Dragon.

So, anything for you this week?

E3 2009: Sony Hearts Final Fantasy, Announces Final Fantasy XIV

The PlayStation 3's RPG lineup is starting to look decent this year with several interesting (if obscure) exclusives making their way across the pacific. Not least of which is Sony's own White Knight Chronicles.

However, as predicted, Sony doesn't actually care about White Knight Chronicles, giving it only a few brief seconds during one of their many many montages throughout the event. Sad times.

What Sony does care about is Square Enix's Final Fantasy, and they took several opportunities to remind you and I that Final Fantasy is totally on PlayStation 3.

Their first Final Fantasy name drop came with the announcement of Final Fantasy VII becoming available for download via the PlayStation Network starting today. They mentioned that they have 50 other PS1 classics that will be following it, but didn't mention what any of them are. Hopefully there will be some more RPGs?

Later during their conference, they gave us a look at a brand new, full-length, full English Final Fantasy XIII trailer, which not only gave us a better look at the game's story, but also briefly introduced a new character who we assume to be playable. I will post it soon.

However, the big Final Fantasy announcement for Sony was that the next next next FF installment, Final Fantasy XIV, will be coming to exclusively to PlayStation 3 in 2010.

Though the trailer shown was short and generally uninformative of what to expect from the game, it was revealed that the game will be an "Online" title, similar, it seems, to Final Fantasy XI.

Since Square Enix originally claimed that their next MMO would be on PC and Xbox 360, Sony's announcement of FFXIV as exclusive is suspect, especially with the "exclusively to PlayStation 3 in 2010" part, which may be indicative of a timed exclusive.

We will await further details, but it was made clear that FFXIV will be on PS3 next year. So yeah.

Unfortunately, there was no news of any other RPGs.

Parasitic Agito Threatens to Infect PSPs with Trailers

So on Friday we got a look at the Final Fantasy XIII trailers. Today is sort of an extension of that, with the PSP titles, Final Fantasy Agito XIII and Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday trailers hitting your local interwebs.

I brought you some leaked shaky-cam trailers earlier this year, but Square Enix has come forth with some nice direct-feed trailers for us lowly masses who don't have the opportunity to attend closed-doors press conferences.

The Parasite Eve trailer, as you probably would expect, is just FMV teaser footage and gives us no real information about what the game will actually be (see Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII), but the Agito trailer actually teases some in-game footage. SHOCKING!

Well, uh, Final Fantasy XIII in Japan. I don't know what else to say here. It's a big deal, I've heard. Unless you understand Japanese and have a PS3, I'm afraid you'll have to wait until next year to get yours.

Japan is also getting a NSFW Queen's Blade PSP spinoff RPG, another edition of Koei's sailing MMO on PC and PS3, and yet another reprint of Ragnarok Online (I think we're up to 11 now, or something).

Meanwhile, North America gets another EverQuest expansion. Yay?

As far as I can tell, Europe appears to be sitting this week out.

Really, though. Final Fantasy XIII in Japan. I don't know how anything else on that list stands any chance against it. Whether it will be good or not remains to be seen, but no mistake, it'll be big, ridiculous boxart notwithstanding.

Latest Final Fantasy XIII Scan Shows Latest Final Fantasy XIII Trailer

In what might be the most pointless use of magazine space in history, the latest issue of V-Jump has re-shown scenes from the latest Final Fantasy XIII trailer in picture form. Yeah.

I don't know what else to say about this. I guess they give you the names of some of the supporting characters who are members of the resistance force, Nola. To fill space, they are Gado (the buff dude with the tall hair), Lebro (the only female of the group, who is strong-willed, but also kind), and Marky (the small and timid goggles kid).

Yeah, I think that's about all the new info. Short and sweet. Makes my job easier. :)



Final Fantasy XIII will be available sometime this year on PlayStation 3 in Japan, and sometime next year on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America and Europe.

E3 2009: Watch Final Fantasy XIII Gameplay in English

During Microsoft's E3 press conference this morning, some time was taken to show off Square Enix's upcoming Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Though the area was the same area available in the recent Japanese PlayStation 3 demo, the footage released today at the conference showed the game with its English voice track and running on an Xbox 360.



Though the video was short, the voice acting was very impressive. The video quality isn't perfect, so I can't be 100% certain, but it looks like the voices actually fit the facial movement. Impressive if true.

Final Fantasy XIII was confirmed for a Spring 2010 release in North America.

Final Fantasy XIII was the only RPG shown at Microsoft's press conference. There go my hopes for a Mistwalker announcement at E3. :(

Final Fantasy XIII Gameplay Shown, You're Not Allowed to Watch

At JumpFesta this weekend in Japan, Square Enix reportedly showed off that ever-elusive Final Fantasy XIII gameplay in their closed megatheater. Though I suppose it was rather sporting of them to actually show it like they promised, the fact that only a handful of people got to see it is... well, actually, it's about what I've come to expect regarding Final Fantasy XIII. Sadly.

So while you don't get to actually witness this spectacle, Jump released some more scans of the upcoming demo, which I suppose will have to suffice for the time being.



The new scans don't reveal anything particularly new, though the girl revealed in the previous scan has been given an official romanized name, Oerba Dia Vanille. So there that is.

Additionally, it has been officially revealed that the game will indeed be making a return to a form of the classic ATB system, though enemies will initially appear onscreen. Touching them or attacking them with your sword will initiate a battle sequence. The new battle system also reportedly allows for party members to attack successively or combine attacks for a much more "free" experience. I suppose we'll need to see it in action to fully understand what that means.

There is still no firm release date on either side of the Pacific for Final Fantasy XIII at this point.

Final Fantasy XIII is also going to PC. I thought you knew that?

So, I've seen this around the internet a little bit, but most people have kind of missed or totally ignored the fact that Final Fantasy XIII isn't "betraying" the PS3 just once, but twice!

Yes, Final Fantasy XIII was officially announced to be heading to PC, on top of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In fact, it seems that the game was announced for PC during Square Enix's press conference at E3. I guess people (myself included) were more caught up with the other announcement that they didn't quite catch this one.

So, to sum up, even if you don't own a PS3 or 360, you'll still be able to get your hands on FFXIII (provided you have a PC that can run it). Good news for those who have yet to make the jump to 7th generation hardware, but for some reason have high-end PCs.

Still no word on when Final Fantasy XIII will launch, but I have my money on 2010. Earliest.

TGS 2009: Sony Announces FFXIII-Themed PS3

As I'm sure you're aware, Square Enix's hyped-to-the-point-of-redundancy Final Fantasy XIII will be coming to both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America and Europe. But it currently remains a PS3 exclusive in its home country of Japan.

As you are also aware, Sony loves them some Final Fantasy. The love it more than their own IPs. So, in a move that should surprise roughly no one, Sony took some time during their presser last night to announce a limited Final Fantasy XIII-themed PlayStation 3. Astounding!

The cleverly named PlayStation 3 Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Edition will be a white coloured PS3 slim with a light pink drawing of FFXIII's heroine, Lightning on the top. The system will contain a 250GB HDD and come bundled with a copy of the game.

The new bundle will be available on the same day as the game launches in Japan on December 17, 2009, and will retail for ￥41,600 (roughly $420 USD). A little pricy if you ask me, but I doubt that will stop any hardcore Final Fantasy enthusiasts.

Final Fantasy XIII Scan Reveals Necessary Afro Gunslinger

Every good fantasy story needs an afro-sporting gunslinger. I'm pretty sure there's a rule about it somewhere. And Final Fantasy XIII has that covered with the newest revealed playable character via this week's Weekly Jump. Check out his translated character description below.

Sazh Katzroy
Gentle and easily moved to tears, Sazh is a middle-aged man who can discern between social responsibility and discrimination. So then, why is he helping Lightning, the "Enemy of Mankind"?

According to the aricle, Sazh is one of Lightning's first allies, and is playable in the upcoming demo (included with the first printing of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Bluray in Japan). He appears to weild dual pistols in battle, and uses his afro as a baby chocobo nest.

Seems like an interesting dude.

Final Fantasy XIII Scans Hint at the Return of ATB, Also Girls with Weird Names

Square Enix has recently dropped the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII demo off into the laps of the folks over at Jump, and they have proceeded to give us a few teasers for the upcoming game.

First up is the name reveal of the third playable character (previously known as "the archer chick" by some). According to this article, her name is Orba Dia Vanilla (Japanese = Woruba Daia-Vanira). Kind of a weird name, but what can you do.

EDIT: After re-reading my pointless rant on name translation, I decided it was retarded and cut it out.

The second interesting point in this article shows off what looks like the game's battle system. If these screens are to be believed, it looks like Final Fantasy XIII will indeed be making some sort of return to traditional turn-based battles, and appears to be utilizing a modified form of ATB (active time battle) that had been a staple of the series since VI up until X. If so, consider me cautiously hopeful that this will be the first Final Fantasy since IX that I am actually hopeful for.

The game is set to appear at this weekend's JumpFesta where it is assumed that we will (finally) get to see the actual game in motion.

Here is Your New Final Fantasy XIII Trailer

As the internet matlocks predicted, the Final Fantasy XIII flash countdown was ticking away to a brand new trailer for the highly-anticipated next numbered installment of Final Fantasy.

The trailer, however, is not in English (as some believed it would be). There are English subtitles, though. I guess that's close enough?

Hey, gameplay! Did you see that? There's gameplay in this trailer! And it looks cool! ...Okay, so, I admit, I'm a little excited for this game now.

The dialogue is a little tough to follow, though. I mean, that's a lot of made-up proper nouns, in both Japanese and English.

Final Fantasy XIII will be available for PlayStation 3 sometime this year in Japan, and available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime next year in North America and Europe.

Square Enix's TGS 2008 Lineup

Well, we are about one month away from this year's Tokyo Game Show. Since the drastic downsizing done to E3 in the past couple of years, TGS is now the biggest trade show in the game industry (though Leipzig is certainly not far behind).

As we get closer to the event, many publishers will inevitably be releasing their showing list, and the first out of the gate is RPG goliath Square Enix. Check out what RPGs they're planning to show off thus far:

It is kind of surprising to see that Dragon Quest IX, a game that has been in development for what seems like a millenium, is only going to be at the show in trailer format.

The ???-On Titles are equally interesting. I would hope that The Last Remnant will at least be playable in some form, as it will be launching on Xbox 360 only about one month later.

This list, of course, may not be diffinitive, as Square Enix sure proved at E3 that it has more up its sleeve than it likes to let on sometimes.

UPDATE: It seems that both The Last Remnant and Star Ocean 4 will be playable at the show. They will also have new trailers on display as well. Nice!
