Divinity II Demo in Time for Christmas

Game news - especially RPG news - tends to slow down around Christmas time. Not hard to believe as its rare for RPGs to be released at all in December (notable exceptions recognized). But publisher dtp has decided to spruce up your holidays with a demo for their upcoming RPG, Divinity II: Ego Draconis (well, it's actually already out in Europe).

As a quick refresher, Divinity II focuses around a young dragon slayer who is inadvertantly granted the powers of a dragon knight - aka, the ability to transform into a dragon - in order to save the kingdom from evil.

The demo dropped yesterday morning on Xbox Live and PC for your downloading pleasure.

Coupled with today's End of Eternity Japanese demo, you might just be able to survive on demos alone until you (hopefully) get some new games for Christmas! ;)

Divinity II: Ego Draconis will be available for PC and Xbox 360 on January 5, 2010 in North America. It is already available in Europe.

Divinity 2 Still Alive, Has Screens to Prove It

Perhaps you remember Divinity 2? You know, that hack and slash PC-style RPG set for release early this year on PC and Xbox 360? Yeah, we haven't really had much of an update, but developer Larian Studios has dropped off some new screens to refresh your memory.

Divinity 2 takes place years after the death of the Divine (the hero of the original title) at the hands of a Dragon Knight. Furious at his death, the Divine's paladins swore revenge and formed the Dragon Slayers. Your character happens to be an apprentice Dragon Slayer, and you begin the game heading off to slay a dragon reported in the area.

Through some twist of fate, it appears that you will instead acquire the dragon's powers, and inadvertently become a Dragon Knight yourself.

Divinity II: Ego Dragonis will be available for PC and Xbox 360 sometime later this year in North America and Europe.

For more screens and the game's trailer, you can check out the game's official site here.

Venetica is Still Alive, Here are Screens to Prove it

If there are any out there who remember Venetica, the European-developed action-RPG following the daughter of Death, you might be wondering why things have been so hush-hush about it. Well, I don't know why either, but the game is still alive and well, and publisher DTP has sent some new screens to prove it.

Included with the screens, DTP and Deck13 have given some new details for the title as well. One main feature is the Twilight World, where souls go after death. Scarlett (the game's protagonist) will be able to travel between the world of the living and the Twilight World in order to converse with characters that have already passed on. She will also revert to this world if defeated in the world of the living.

The main antagonist of the game (as revealed so far), Viktor, also resides in the Twilight World, where he threatens both worlds using the stolen power of the Grimm Reaper.

According to the press release (which I'm too lazy to post in its entirity), the game is still on track for a 2009 release on Xbox 360 and PC, so I suppose that's good news. I'd personally like to see the game in motion a little more, but I guess I'll take what I can get for now.

A Fresh Look at Venetica

You may not have heard of Venetica, an action RPG for the PC and Xbox 360 developed by a small team in Germany. That's okay. We have some coverage of it for you.

Venentica was announced several months ago with about 3 screenshots, a YouTube trailer, and a short summary of the game's premise. It was an eyebrow raiser, but not much more than that. Well developer Deck13 has made an appearance at the currently ongoing Games Convention in Leipzeig Germany and has released a plethora of new screens and some more gamplay details.

The game's story follows Scarlet, your average action female lead with a low-cut shirt, tight leather pants, and quick slashing combos. What sets her apart is her dad, who happens to be Death. Apparently there has been some confusion in the afterlife, and a bunch of supposed-to-be-dead souls have escaped and are running around Venice all undead-like. Which, you know, isn't supposed to happen. So Death sends his daughter out to clean up. (I suppose Death is just too busy to be bothered with these kinds of things.)

The game features a heavy emphasis on action, encouraging the players to work on exploiting their enemies' weaknesses rather than just button mashing, and gameplay will reportedly change depending on what weapon you have equipped. Many of these weapons will apparently have other uses than just combat, such as a large hammer which can be used to smash certain walls.

So far, the screenshots of the various locations Scarlet will be visiting are looking quite nice, though I'm not completely sold on the character model of Scarlet herself. The game still is quite a ways off from release, with the developers shooting for sometime late next year, so there is certainly still plenty of time to tweak.

From what I've seen and heard about this game, it looks like some sort of interesting mix of Fable, the Legend of Zelda, and a straight-up action title. Not necessarily bad source material, and I'm a lot more interested in the game since I learned that it is the same developers behind the quirky PC title Ankh. So here's hoping Venetica holds up when it sees release around Q3 2009.

You can check out IGNs hands-on with the game here, or look at their full screenshot gallery here.
