Sega recently dropped word on new downloadable content for its SRPG/shooter hybrid title, Valkyria Chronicles, revealing three upcoming packs for the PlayStation 3 title.
The most basic pack is called Hard EX Mode (not sure what the "EX" is all about, but yeah). As you might guess, this is a pack to make the game, uh, harder. Enemies will reportedly be stronger, and you will no longer have the use of the Edelweiss tank.
The other two packs are full new episodes. The first, titled "Enter the Edy Detachment," puts Edy at the head of a small detached force attempting to reunited with the main Gallian force when they come across a small village under Imperial occupation. The second, called "Behind Her Blue Flame," follows a young Imperial engineer named Johann who is assigned to Selvaria's division at the outbreak of war on the Gallian borders, allowing you to see the war from the enemy's perspective.
None of the announced packs have been firmly dated or priced at this point, but Sega has vaguely stated that they will be available this Spring. Whenever that is supposed to be, I guess.
Anyone interested in returning to the anime-inspired frontlines?
Following in the footsteps of Blue Dragon, Persona 3, and half of the Tales of games, Sega's PlayStation 3 shooter-SRPG Valkyria Chronicles (Senjou no Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles in Japan) is getting an anime adaptation in Japan.
Set to begin broadcast next Spring, the anime will be handled by A-1 pictures (the studio behind Kannagi, Kuroshitsuji, and Persona: Trinity Soul).
It is currently unknown which network will be broadcasting it.
Dust off your PSTriples, Valkyria Chronicles (known as Senjou no Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles in Japan) ships to North American retailers today. Sega wanted to make sure that you didn't forget, so they released a quaint little launch trailer to commemorate the game's... uh, launch. It's embedded below.
Some gorgeous stuff there. The graphics look fantastic and the story looks like it could be quite good. However, battles that take over an hour to play are not my forte, sadly. But hey, it would be nice to see Sega using this graphics engine to make a non-SRPG. ;)
Valkyria Chronicles is already available on PlayStation 3 in Japan and Europe, and ships today in North America.
Yes, it is in English... though I must say its dubbing seems like it will be competing with Infinite Undiscovery for cheesiest English voices of the year award. Thankfully, it's supposedly retaining its Japanese audio track, unlike IU (murderous glare at Square Enix).
However, all that purdy cell shading is safely in tact and ready to add a much-needed dose of JRPGing to the PS3 next month. Too bad they couldn't make the trailer very interesting...
Dear Sega: You have a unique-looking game here that has some real potential. Stop treating it like you don't give a crap about it. Also, fail less. Sincerely, RPG fans everywhere.
Valkyria Chronicles will be available on PlayStation 3 in Europe on October 31, 2009, and in North America on November 04, 2009.
You've heard of Valkyria Chronicles? Y'know, that shooter-strategy-RPG hybrid that has bee-uu-tiful cell-shaded graphics? Well if you were planning on picking it up because you really love the art style (and I certainly can't blame you for that), you may be pleased to learn that GameStop/EB Games and GameCrazy are offering a free 32-page artbook with the pre-order of the game.
Art books are my favorite pre-order bonus. Just thought I'd throw that in there.
Valkyria Chronicles is on sale November 04, 2008 in North America.
The PlayStation 3 is a power house of multithread processing and... uh... crappy motion controls? What it certainly is not is a home to RPGs. Well Sega has decided to step up and fill that void (sort of) with a cell shaded World War II SRPG/third person shooter/real-time strategy game (have I missed anything in there?) called Valkyria Chronicles.
Set in the fictional European country of Gallia, Valkyria Chronicles follows a group of Gallian nationals who form a civilian military unit in order to defend their small, autonomous country from invading forces.
Japan has had access to this game since April, and though Sega has promised the game will see light on North American shores, they have been incredibly quiet on any real details. Well, PS3 owners, you can stop holding your breath. Valkyria Chronicles has been officially announced for release on November 11, 2008 with a European version supposedly close to that. As an added bonus for the purists among you, the game will feature a dual-language track, with the Japanese voices optional in case you don't like listening to English.
I personally love this game's art direction, but can't really say that I'm a huge fan of the SRPG/third person shooting/RTS hybrid genre. But maybe you are?
During Sony's press conference this afternoon, clips of Valkyria Chronicles were shown during one of the "games montage" videos displayed. ...However, it wasn't for the PS3, but the PSP instead.
We're not entirely sure if this was a mistake on Sony's part, or if Sega is doing another iteration (or port) of the game for PSP.
Since this would probably be a fairly big deal, it seems odd that neither Sega nor Sony have announced anything, so we are guessing it was a mistake.
We'll let you know when we have more details.
UPDATE: Sony has come forward to apologize for mistakenly showing Valkyria Chronicles on their PSP montage. Sega has confirmed that Valkyria Chronicles will release on PlayStation 3, and that no PSP version is in the works.
