Star Ocean 4 is Big in Japan, Becomes the First 360 Chart-Topper Ever

It's no secret: Japan buys RPGs to the exclusion of almost everything else. When a new JRPG hits the land of the rising sun, people go and buy it.

So the fact that Star Ocean 4 sold well enough in its first week to place it the 3rd highest selling Xbox 360 game in Japan of all-time - though impressive - is not really all that surprising.

What makes this feat especially impressive, is that it has made the Japanese game sales charts for last week at the coveted number 1 spot! This top selling spot is usually reserved for a DS or Wii game, or more rarely, a PSP game. But there has never been an Xbox 360 game in that spot, EVER, until Star Ocean 4.

With SO4 nearing Tales of Vesperia's total sales (2nd highest selling 360 game) after only one week on shelves, it is speculated that the game may have what it takes to dethrone even Blue Dragon as the country's most popular Xbox 360 game.

I still haven't been able to pick up a copy up here yet, so I can't personally comment on whether I think it is deserving of this popularity or not, but tri-Ace must have done something right.

Either way, its nice to see high-profile HD RPGs get some recognition in a market so dominated by handhelds.
