RPGs of the Week: Strangely Late Edition

I am a terrible person because I have been bad at updating. This is no means an appropriate attempt at absolution, but I present to you the RPGs that will/have already arrived on shelves this week (March 22 - 27, 2010):

North America
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey – Atlus – Nintendo DS

Japan
Nobunaga no Yabou Online: Shinsei no Shou – Koei – PC
Lineage Eternal Life: Dragon Slayers 1st – NCSoft, E-Frontier – PC
Bokujou Monogatari: Sugar Mura to Minna no Negai (The Best) – Marvelous – PSP
Yggdra Union (The Best) – Sting – PSP
Romancing SaGa 2 – Square Enix – WVC

Europe
From the Abyss – Sonic Powered, Nobilis – Nintendo DS
Infinite Space – Platinum, Sega – Nintendo DS
Pokemon: HeartGold/SoulSilver – GameFreak, Nintendo – Nintendo DS
Last Rebellion – Hit Maker, Koei – PlayStation 3
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Calibur – Quest, Nintendo – WVC
Resonance of Fate – tri-Ace, Sega – Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Between nothing but a single DS dungeon crawler (albeit the latest iteration of a cult-followed series of dungeon crawlers) and reprints for Japan, Europe has unquestionably the best haul this week. The DS gets From the Abyss, Infinite Space, and MOAR POKEMANS! tri-Ace's latest hits the 360 and PS3, and Koei is bringing NIS' first 3D HD RPG to European PS3s. Also, Ogre Battle 64 is getting a Virtual Console release for those who like to pay for games they probably already own.

I don't know if I will get Strange Journey or not. I'm not extremely pleased with Atlus' HD feet-dragging, and even less pleased to see their main franchise on the sub-par DS, so I'm in no hurry to pick it up at full price.

Anything for you this week?

well put man, i'm extremely disappointed with atlus lately.

the only thing i slightly care about is persona 3 on psp, in a few months.

there sure as hell better be some persona 5 or smt 4 announcements at e3 or by the latest tgs.

i mean come on, give us a damn worthwhile smt game on the 360/ps3 already.

also i wasn't too impressed with RoF from tri-ace, it's just not a very fun game, the battle system just doesn't cut it for me, nor do most of the visuals/characters ect.

imo star ocean 4 was better, those visuals were really good in that game, especially on the 360.

too bad too, other than ff13 theres not much else out there latel.

nier might possibly be good next month, but i won't have my hopes too high for that either.

oh well.

Strange Journey *is* SMT 4. :)

I'm not picking up SJ, but I did decide to take the plunge into Dragon Age Origins since it's Amazon's Deal of the Day today, and I'm completely obsessed with the Mass Effect series. Hopefully I'll enjoy DA half as much.

@sav: yeah, Atlus really needs to get with the program at this point. It's been 4 1/2 years now since the generation started and we still haven't seen a single Atlus-developed game in HD. If Gust and NIS can do it, I really can't figure out what Atlus' problem is. they have supposedly been working on one for quite some time now, it would be nice if they would at least show us what it looks like.

i'm expecting NIER to be terrible. that way i hope to be pleasantly surprised. (hey, it worked with Drakengard 2!)

@Billy: Strange Journey may well be SMT4, but its platform is not befitting its legacy, obscure though it may be. that would be like the next real Dragon Quest being on DS instead of a real cons- oh wait.

and Dragon Age is much more RPG than Mass Effect is. way more story and freedom, though less cover-based shooting. ME2 was definitely fun to play, but felt shallow for an 'RPG' (i'm not even sure i can call it that anymore).

Agree that in terms of stats and menu screens, ME2 is closer to Gears of War than most so-called RPGs, but to the extent that RPGs are actually about playing a role, being invested in the characters and the choices I've made, it's just about the purest and most amazing RPG experience I've ever had. :) Looking forward to trying Dragon Age.
